The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. As the Scriptures say,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise
    and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.”

So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe.

This week's scripture comes from Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, chapter one, verses eighteen through twenty one, in the New Living Translation. Allow yourself to be still, to breathe slowly, and to recenter your scattered senses upon the presence of God. We will read this week's scripture thrice, pausing for a moment of reflection after each reading. This scripture is a gift to be received, not a problem to be dissected. This scripture is a gift to be received slowly and to be savored. This scripture will become a prayer to be taken away with us into our week. In our first reading, listen for a word or phrase that stands out to you. After the reading, silently repeat that word or phrase in your mind.
